The official ACL rules and regulations currently require wooden boards for sanctioned ACL play. The rules specify a 2-foot-by-4-foot playing surface, a centered 6-inch hole and stated requirements for top thickness, support, weight and board height.

ACL rules also state that, beginning October 1, 2026, ACL State-level and higher events will require the applicable marked and approved board classifications. Buyers preparing for sanctioned competition should verify the exact board and event requirements rather than assuming regulation dimensions alone establish approval.

Recreational and Backyard Cornhole Boards

Recreational boards are intended primarily for backyards, parties, camping, tailgates and casual games. They may be smaller, lighter and easier to transport than full-size wooden boards.

Do not assume that “all-weather” means a board can remain outdoors permanently. Review the manufacturer’s instructions for:

Composite or plastic boards should not be described as ACL competition boards when current ACL rules require wood for sanctioned events.

The official ACO rules specify an approved playing surface between 47.5 and 48 inches long and between 23.5 and 24 inches wide. The rules also specify a 6-inch hole, front and rear heights and construction requirements.

Regulation size and league certification are different. A board may follow published dimensions without carrying a league approval or equipment stamp.

How to Choose Cornhole Boards

1. Decide Where You Will Play

4. Review the Board Weight

The ACL’s current rules require sanctioned-event boards to weigh at least 15 pounds. This does not mean every 15-pound board is ACL approved; material, dimensions and equipment classification must also be considered.

5. Confirm the Hole and Heights

For full-size competition-oriented boards, review:

• Hole diameter
• Hole position
• Front playing-surface height
• Rear playing-surface height
• Board length and width

The ACL currently specifies a 6-inch hole, within tolerance, centered width-wise with its center 9 inches from the rear edge. Its rules specify a front height between 2.5 and 3.5 inches and a rear height of 12 inches, within tolerance.

The ACO publishes slightly different front-height wording, specifying a range between 3 and 4 inches. Buyers preparing for a particular league should follow that organization’s current equipment rules.

6. Determine What Is Included

A board listing may include:
